The Awkward Age by Henry James6/26/2023 If there is a work in his canon that flies in the face of expectation and merits description in broadly synonymous terms such as “objective,” “dramatic,” or even “behaviorist” in view of its scenic quality and sustained dialogic makeup, it is no doubt the story of Nanda Brookenham and her smart associates in fin-de-siècle, well-to-do London society. It is part of the critical convention to argue that Henry James’s post-dramatic evolution toward modernist forms of fiction in the late 1890s was enlivened by the occurrence of a narrative oddity such as The Awkward Age (1898–99).

The clockwork angel6/26/2023 The plot is beyond goodness, and it has every paranormal creature. The book is written in third person and who knows me knows that I don't like books in third person but in this one I didn't mind at all.It was perfectly build and the story fits well with characters, their personality with their actions, the style of talking with the time book is written in.Everything is in the right place. “Only the very weak-minded refuse to be influenced by literature and poetry.” I never thought this could be that good.I had started "City of Bones" (the first book of The Mortal Instruments by the same author) but it didn't work for me so I thought this could be the same but I was totally wrong. This was an art,a fine peace of art.I read it in one day.Literally couldn't put the book down for a second.Everything is perfect and matches, and I really dig the lifestyle of the time before two hundred years, the classy outfits and the funny teasing. You can find the full review and more about this book on my blog! “One must always be careful of books," said Tessa, "and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us.” It contains jokes, slang, informative writing and even mentions of memes. This book displays a fantastic and adventurous story. This review from my ten year old daughter. Herland charlotte perkins6/25/2023 Gaard has shown that the claim for the superiority, separation, and domination of the self is based on the difference between self and other, where all things associated with self are privileged, and all things described as other are devalued. This study is an attempt to reject the self/other, man/woman and culture/nature dualisms of patriarchal thought, and show how women and nature are liberated from oppression. The novel is analysed based on Greta Gaard's theory of ecofeminism that cites patriarchal religion, Darwin's human evolutionary development, and the metaphorical or ideological explanations as the sources of the separation of culture from nature that lead to the self/other dualism. Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) is an eminent American philosopher, lecturer, social critic, and known for her feminist utopian novel, Herland (1998). The boleyn deceit6/24/2023 Commonly elicits a response along the lines of "that's not what's wrong here". However, the center of this trope is a person who, despite having all the time in the world and all the information, comes to a conclusion so wrong it's hard to be even further from correct. The point is the sort of thing that any reasonable or informed person will spot and understand given a few seconds or enough information. A character completely misses a really obvious point for comic effect. Two solitudes by hugh maclennan6/24/2023 In both his fiction and his nonfiction, MacLennan had a continual concern for the impact of geography upon character, and thus, as people make history, upon action, fictive or historical. In MacLennan’s fiction, geography is preeminently such a force. Underlying both the dissertation and the novels is a view of historical causality.Īs Erich Auerbach has remarked, “Basically, the way in which we view human life and society is the same whether we are concerned with things of the past or things of the present” a corollary of this may be that when a writer is, like MacLennan, both a historian and a novelist, his or her narratives of individual human lives will be shaped by larger forces that transcend the concerns of the psychological novelist. His doctoral dissertation, Oxyrhynchus, discussing the history of an area in Egypt during the seven hundred years that it was subject to the Roman Empire, foreshadowed such major themes in his novels as colonialism, the wanderer, the town-country antithesis, and geographical determinism. Hugh MacLennan (1907-1990) began as a historian, and, in a sense, he remained one throughout his long writing career. When I finally saw the original pulp covers years later, I can sort of see why the magazine didn't catch on. Paperback Library's Avenger reprints had a logo design and cover art that was so successful in selling the series that not only did they manage to reprint ALL of the pulp novels, but they commissioned a dozen new ones from Ron Goulart, making that series even MORE successful in paperback reprint form than they were in the original pulp magazine incarnation. Bantam's Doc Savage reprints had those great James Bama covers. Ace's early ERB reprints had covers by Frazetta and Krenkle (and Lancer's Conan series had the Frazetta covers, too). One thing that you realize in retrospect when looking at what kind of pulp reprints were successful in the 1960s and 1970s is how important the cover art and logo design were in helping to sell the books.
